Research Team

The MEMOs Research Team brings together an international collective of scholars engaged in our broad research area of pre-modern Anglo-Islamic encounters. Members range from doctoral researchers to more established academics. Eligibility for joining the team include specialising within our research remit, being at a relevant stage of an academic career (minimum PhD level or equivalent) and a commitment to engaging in MEMOs research activities.

If you would like to be considered for the MEMOs Research Team, please send a CV and brief statement of interest to [email protected].

We particularly encourage researchers from underrepresented backgrounds and non-Western universities.

As an academic space, MEMOs is kind, nurturing, rigorous, engaging and altogether exciting. Working amongst, and learning from, so many excellent scholars from around the world, has enriched my own research immensely. MEMOs has also given me the comfort of an unbounded intellectual community that celebrates diversity, advocates for social justice, and strives to create positive impact through research and exchange.

-Hassana Moosa (King’s College London, UK), MEMOs News Editor

Helping me to break what I could describe as a geographical academic glass ceiling; Medieval and Early Modern Orients has enabled me to build new professional connections across the world in a very constructive and friendly environment which has fed me a lot since I became a member of the team. Apart from writing blogs, presenting papers at panels, and writing research articles or chapters within the project, being part of Medieval and Early Modern Orients has added significantly to my academic credibility and visibility, which has helped me to find a wider audience for my research. Thank you, Medieval and Early Modern Orients, for adding value to my academic life and beyond.

-Dr Murat Öğütcü (Cappadocia University, Turkey), Member of MEMOs Research Team

Internship Scheme

The MEMOs Internship Scheme is a digital placement aimed at undergraduate students of relevant disciplines (English, History, etc). The scheme is designed to offer insight and experience in a major digital humanities project and provide academic guidance and mentorship for students interested in specialising in medieval and/or early modern studies.

Placements are run four times a year in spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each placement runs for a period of eight weeks with an expected time commitment of six hours a week. The internship is conducted remotely so students from any part of the world are welcome to apply.

We encourage the institutions the students are studying at to fund the placement for their student. If funded, the intern will be paid at the standard hourly rate of their sponsoring institution.

For further information and if you would like to apply for a placement, please email: [email protected].

We particularly encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds and those from non-Western universities to apply.

“I felt welcome and supported throughout my time as a MEMOs intern. I really enjoyed getting an insight into academia and publishing and learning about all your roles. Two of my favourite things I did were compiling the book post and live tweeting the conference, and I'm also really enjoying the planning process for my blog post. I think giving interns those kinds of interactive and creative opportunities is a great idea; I got to try out things I'd never had the chance to before (such as live tweeting events). I think the social media experience I got from the internship will be really useful going forward.”

-Cherry Dicko, Summer Intern 2021 funded by the University of Liverpool
